LitttleLoca - The YouTube Queen

LocaMotion Derailed

The story begins early one morning with LittleLoca applying her signature makeup, but before she leaves her room, she checks her blog comments. She reads a hate comment, “Go back to Mexico wetback bitch.” Loca responds by declaring her mission, “I'm going to make the best damn video. Get into film school, and show everyone that ghetto is only a state-of-mind.”

As we follow Loca through her day, the story unfolds from the perspective of her camera. First, a socialite steals the camera, then it’s returned by two cowardly cholos. By the end of the day, Loca finds herself exhausted on her aunt’s couch. Awakened by her aunt, Loca receives a present from her aunt that restores Loca’s passion for self-expression.

Loca on YouTube

This short film is centered on a character named LittleLoca, created and portrayed by Stevie Ryan. Stevie’s short videos on the YouTube web site have not only helped put YouTube web site on mainstream media, she has sparked controversy with her portrayal of an East Los Angeles Chola. The character challenges the stereotype and racist attitudes pointed at the chola sub-culture. Despite the back story that LittleLoca graduated high school with a straight “A” grade point, remains a virgin, advocates abstinence for teenagers and supports women equality, she has garnered many “haters” that try to drive her away from YouTube. However, LittleLoca freely speaks her mind and is not afraid to offer counter criticism or rebuttal when her viewpoint is challenged. Viewers have responded with varied opinions, beliefs and prejudices as displayed by the following viewer comments:

i dont see anyone ASSUMING THEY ARE REAL and btw, the fact that silent girl is probably a joke doesn’t necessarily undermine anything. 'Real' latinos are allowed to have a sense of humor too.

Filmmakers Goals

Angel Aviles-McClinton and Paul Martinez discovered LittleLoca on YouTube and were intrigued her video blogs. As they watched the videos and read the comments left by her viewers, Angel and Paul were compelled to learn the truth about LittleLoca. After providing an article for Bullfighters Café.com, a web site that Angel and Paul own, Stevie revealed that she was an actress and was drawing from her past for the LittleLoca character. Within a week, Angel and Paul decided that a short film should be developed to bring Loca to a larger audience and touch on the racist attitudes posted on the YouTube web site.

As filmmakers, Angel and Paul felt that it was a gift to find a story that already sparked so much passionate debate and interest, but the main goal for the film short is to help Stevie grow and support the LittleLoca character.

Angel Aviles-McClinton

Angel attended Performing Arts High School and Hunter College in New York City but moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. During her acting career she worked with Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Michael Patrick King and Steven Bochco. You may know Angel best from her role as SadGirl from the movie “Mi Vida Loca”, directed by Allison Anders. The movie was made almost fifteen years ago but remains a top rental in many cities (including NetFlix top 25 for Los Angeles 2005).

As a result of Angel’s strong fan base of SadGirl it was an easy decision for Angel to collaborate with Stevie. They share a common experience of portraying chola characters and together they look to continue to showcase strong female characters.

Pablo Martinez

Pablo met Angel in 2001 while working for a computer accessory manufacture. Together they led a multimedia department with interactive, video and specialty marketing projects that were delivered to global markets. In 2003 they decided to venture into their own business of multimedia development, including the creation of Bullfighters Café, a virtual web site that showcases Latin creativity.

Pablo brings his interest in Fine Art and screenwriting to the LittleLoca project. Pablo is also active in the Latino art community and attends a live forum called Mental Menudo in Los Angeles. It was in this forum that Pablo met Magu Lujan who has become a strong influence in Pablo’s approach to his art and multimedia development. Magu was also gracious to accept an invitation to appear in the Loca project.
